A CHOICE OF HEIR THAT ALLOWS PAYING HALF THE INHERITANCE TAX

💰 PROPERTY TRANSFER AND TAX BURDEN

Providing financial assistance to children and grandchildren is a natural desire for most parents and grandparents, especially in retirement. One of the most effective ways to help is by transferring part of the property as early as possible. However, tax authorities monitor this process and impose gift and inheritance taxes, which can be significant, especially in families with only one child. There is a lesser-known technique that allows for transferring large sums without additional taxation.

🎁 GIFTS: LEGAL WAYS TO REDUCE TAXES

By law, you can transfer money to each of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren up to €31,865 without incurring any tax. However, there are two conditions: the giver must be under 80 years old, and the recipient must be over 18.

This financial transfer can be repeated every 15 years without taxes, which allows for the early transfer of a substantial part of the estate. This tax exemption applies to each gift made by any of the grandparents or even great-grandparents.

🔄 “SKIPPING” A GENERATION: THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD

The most tax-efficient way to transfer property is to skip one generation. That is, arrange the inheritance so that it passes directly to the grandchildren, bypassing the children.

Why is this beneficial? Because inheritance tax is only paid once in this case, rather than with each transfer from generation to generation. If the first heir renounces their share, the property is not taxed twice, which is especially important if the difference between the two inheritances is only a few years.

Renouncing inheritance may seem illogical from a financial standpoint. However, it is a smart move that allows future generations to avoid double taxation.

📊 EXAMPLE OF TAX BENEFIT CALCULATION

Let’s consider a schematic example. Monsieur Martin inherits €500,000 from his deceased father. He must pay an inheritance tax of €78,194.

If, after his death, this same sum is transferred to his only child, that child will pay €78,194 again.

To help his child, Monsieur Martin decides to renounce the inheritance. As a result, the property directly passes to the next generation, applying the same tax deductions and rates, but the tax is paid only once.

🏡 INHERITANCE IN OLD AGE: IS IT WORTH RENOUNCING?

Due to increasing life expectancy, many people inherit property in old age, often while retired. If there is no urgent need for this inheritance, it is better to renounce it so that it directly passes to the children.

This approach allows the family to avoid multiple tax payments on the same property.
